Diversity Experiences
Family Mentorship Program - Spring 2016
During this program I was partnered with a student from the physical therapy program. We were mentored by a family with a son who has cerebral palsy. This experience allowed me to not only glimpse the busy schedules and educational struggles the family faces, but also the medical side. My partner and I spent time with the family at the North Dakota Heritage Center, played with the kids while talking to the parents at their home, and even had the chance to sit in on the child's aquatic, physical, and occupational therapy. Participating in this program was very rewarding since it gave me insight into the daily lives of a family with a child who has a disability and how other professions interact with children who have a special need.

Theodore Jamerson Elementary School - Fall 2016
This semester I am currently observing and helping in one of the kindergarten classrooms at Theodore Jamerson Elementary School (TJES). Although many aspects of the school are similar to those of the public school system, this experience has broadened my view of the impact culture can have on education. My time at this school allowed me to see and participate in differentiated reading, math daily 3, after school activities, and how the school works to maintain attendance.

Special Needs Gymnastics Class - Fall 2016 - Winter 2017
While working at the Bismarck Gymnastics Academy I have been giving the chance to coach a class designed for children with special needs and an open gym designed for adults with special needs. The classes really challenged me to grow as a coach. I was called on to find new ways to teach old skills and think of different activities that met the ability levels of the participants. These experiences taught me more about and allowed me to practice accommodating and modifying lessons.
